Esmail Abdi is a mathematics teacher at a high school in Islam Shahr, as well as the Secretary General of Iran’s Teachers’ Trade Association (ITTA). As part of his trade union activities campaigning for labour rights, Esmail Abdi has organized peaceful demonstrations and given interviews with domestic and foreign media regarding teachers’ labour rights.

Human rights defenders and journalists are arrested, detained and prosecuted in unfair trials. HRDs continue to receive death threats and are subjected to harassment, arbitrary arrest and detention. They are refused bail or receive extreme bail conditions. HRDs are additionally subjected to systematic surveillance and their family members are targeted.
